Whitehaven Beach with kids: a family day trip guide from Airlie Beach
By GSL Marine · 31 October 2026
Quick answer: Whitehaven Beach is a great family day out from Airlie Beach. GSL Marine’s Whitehaven tours are family-friendly: under 4s travel free, and child prices cover ages 4 to 14. Kids can snorkel from age 6, or younger if they’re competent swimmers, and life jackets are compulsory for under 12s in the water. With young children, the Beach Club Pass is the easiest day, with four to five hours on the sand, shade, paddle boards and beach games.

Is Whitehaven Beach good for kids?
Most kids think Whitehaven is the best beach they’ve ever seen, and they’re probably right. The water is clear and shallow at the edge, and the white silica sand is soft and fine. Tourism Whitsundays points out that the sand stays cool underfoot, even on a hot day.
It’s also a long day. Our tours run about eight hours, from an 8:30am check-in to about 4:45 to 5:00pm back at the marina. A little planning makes a big difference.

Which Whitehaven tour is best for kids?
Toddlers and preschoolers: the Beach Club Pass. It’s the most relaxed option: four to five hours on the sand, with shade, paddle boards and beach games. There’s no walking track to climb and no snorkelling to organise.
Primary school kids who swim well: the Reef & Beach Experience. They get their first real reef snorkel, with gear and stinger suits (in season) provided, plus two to three hours on the beach. One family wrote in a Google review:
“My family of 4 had the most amazing day… particularly with our 6 year old. His first time snorkling and they made him feel so welcome and happy.”
Older kids and teens: the Whitehaven Wanderer for the Hill Inlet lookout, or the Ultimate Whitehaven Experience if they want to do everything. The Ultimate is a busy day, with only about an hour on the beach, so it suits active families best.

Tips for a smooth family day
- Have breakfast at Rufus & Co. The cafe opens at 7am, and check-in is right there at 8:30am.
- Pack extra snacks. Lunch is included, plus a morning snack and afternoon fruit. But Whitehaven is remote, with no shops, and kids get hungry in the sun. There’s no seafood or nuts on the menu. If your child has allergies, bring their food and tell the crew on the day.
- Cover up. Hats, rash vests and reef-safe sunscreen. From November to May, the Queensland Government advises full-body lycra suits in the water because of marine stingers, and Queensland Parks warns that children can be more badly affected by stings. Read our stinger season guide.
- Keep them close at the water. Queensland Parks advises always supervising children near water, even in the shallows.
- Bring a jumper for the ride home, and something to keep little ones busy on the boat.
- Plan an easy evening. It’s a full day in the sun, so most families are ready for an early night.

Getting on and off the boat
Pina Colada has a bow ramp, so on most tides you step straight off the front of the boat onto the sand. On low tides, and for the Hill Inlet walk, we use a tender instead. The crew helps everyone in and out. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, call us first on (07) 4015 4191 so we can recommend the best tour.
Older kids? Add a jet ski ride on another day
If your kids are 8 or older, they can ride as a passenger with an adult driver (18+) on our one-hour Hour of Power jet ski safari. Drivers must be 16 or older. It’s $197 per jet ski for one or two riders, and it fits easily into a morning or afternoon. Find out more in our guide: do you need a licence to ride a jet ski in Airlie Beach?
